Three people have been confirmed dead, with 20 others currently receiving treatment in various hospitals, following the collapse of a building at the Accra New Town Experimental School.
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak disclosed this during a media briefing after the first phase of search and rescue operations at the scene.
He explained that the casualty figures were thoroughly verified through a coordinated effort involving the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the National Ambulance Service.
“We have cross-checked and double-checked from all the agencies involved to ensure accuracy,” he said, adding that determining the exact number of people in the building at the time of the incident posed a challenge.
Out of the 23 victims recorded, the Minister confirmed that three—one male and two females—lost their lives. He noted that the identities of the deceased have not yet been officially released.
The remaining 20 survivors are receiving medical care at the Police Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, Maamobi General Hospital, and a private health facility.
According to the breakdown provided, 15 of the victims are female while eight are male. Seven of the survivors are minors, although the Minister clarified that none of those who died were children.
Mr Mohammed-Mubarak praised the swift and coordinated response of emergency services, describing their efforts as commendable after working through the night to rescue victims and account for those affected.
Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the collapse, while support efforts are being directed toward victims and their families.
