Residents of Krispocity in the Awutu Senya East Municipality were thrown into fear and panic after two separate groups of suspected armed robbers stormed the area at midnight, attacking market women and okada riders, and making away with large sums of money, mobile phones, and other valuables.
According to reports, the robbers often operate during the late hours of the night, arriving on motorcycles or in taxis to target victims, particularly traders heading to the market in the early morning.
Residents say the situation has been worsened by non-functioning streetlights, which have plunged the area into darkness and created a safe haven for criminal activities.
The suspects are reported to be armed with knives and guns, which they use to threaten and assault their victims.
In an interview, Nana Ansah, one of the victims, recounted her ordeal, stating that she was attacked at midnight and robbed of a bag containing GH₵1,500, a mobile phone, and other personal belongings. She further revealed that she was forcibly pushed into a taxi by the attackers in an apparent kidnapping attempt.
“I started shouting for help, and they pushed me out of the moving car into a nearby bush,” she narrated.
Other residents expressed deep concern over the increasing rate of robberies and attempted kidnappings in the community. They lamented that fear has gripped the area, making it unsafe for people to go about their daily activities, especially at night and in the early hours of the morning.
They are calling on authorities to urgently fix the faulty streetlights and intensify security patrols to help curb the rising insecurity in the area.
