Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has revealed that the government has begun steps to recruit new staff into the public service, despite ongoing fiscal pressures.
The disclosure comes after it was revealed that the government had to borrow GH₵17 billion in 2025 to meet salary obligations.
Speaking at a Presidential Encounter with Organised Labour on March 17, Dr. Forson said the planned recruitment is part of an agreement with labour unions aimed at strengthening workforce capacity in key public institutions.
“On the 2026 base pay, government committed to engage with unions on outstanding conditions of service and to undertake critical recruitment into the public service, all within budget constraints. In this regard, government has commenced processes for the recruitment of staff into the public service,” he explained.
He further noted that the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission has started discussions with Organised Labour on reviewing conditions of service, with approvals expected soon.
