Police to roll out Traffitech-GH System to curb road accidents
The Ghana Police Service, through its Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), is set to introduce new traffic regulations aimed at reducing human error-related accidents on the country’s roads.
The Traffitech-GH system, an automated traffic law enforcement programme, will utilize cameras and scanners installed in vehicles and at hazardous junctions to gather evidence on traffic offenders.
Chief Superintendent Alexander Obeng, speaking to the media, revealed that overspeeding accounts for about 60% of road crashes, and the police are gathering evidence on those violating red lights.
He stated that the Traffitech-GH project is designed to address this issue and reduce accidents.
According to Chief Superintendent Obeng, a bill currently before Parliament is expected to be enacted into law by April, paving the way for the implementation of the new regulations. The police have already issued over 120,000 caution notices to drivers who have exceeded speed limits in towns.
The Traffitech-GH system is part of the police’s efforts to enhance road safety and reduce accidents caused by human error.
