The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has extended its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressed sympathy to victims injured in the fatal motor accident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Ntoaso along the Accra–Suhum Dual Carriageway near Nsawam.
In a statement issued on Monday, February 16, the Authority described the crash as tragic, noting its devastating consequences.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the petrol tanker, which was travelling from Tema to Kumasi, lost control at about 4:30 a.m. Reports suggest the tanker’s bulk separated from the tractor head, veered off the road and later exploded.
The explosion sparked a fire that engulfed several vehicles and motorcycles travelling behind the tanker, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. Some victims remain unidentified, while the injured were transported to nearby health facilities for medical treatment.
The NRSA commended personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service, particularly teams from Suhum and Nsawam, for their swift intervention in containing the blaze and preventing further damage.
According to the Authority, the incident underscores the significant risks associated with transporting petroleum and other flammable substances on the nation’s highways.
The NRSA has therefore urged Oil Marketing Companies, bulk transport operators and other stakeholders in the downstream petroleum sector to urgently review their safety protocols. It called for stricter adherence to vehicle inspection and maintenance standards, proper coupling and loading procedures, enhanced driver training and fatigue management, improved competency requirements, and full compliance with hazardous goods transportation regulations.
The Authority further advised motorists to exercise caution when approaching accident scenes, obey traffic directives and maintain safe distances from heavy-duty vehicles, particularly those carrying hazardous materials.
