Two rooms in the girls’ dormitory at Tolon Senior High School in the Northern Region have been completely destroyed by a fire, with another room partially damaged, according to the Ghana National Fire Service.
The cause of the fire remains unknown. Speaking to JoyNews, the Public Relations Officer of the Fire Service, Baba Hudu, said investigations are ongoing and that officials are yet to formally engage school authorities.
An eyewitness account from a student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the fire broke out while students were preparing for classes. “We noticed smoke coming from the roof of the dormitory, and shortly after, flames erupted,” the student recounted.
Fire officers responded swiftly to the incident and were able to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building. No injuries were reported.
School authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
The fire marks the second such incident at the Tolon SHS girls’ dormitory, following a similar outbreak in 2022.
The incident adds to growing concerns over fire outbreaks in schools across the Northern Region. Just last week, a fire gutted the girls’ dormitory at the Northern School of Business (Nobisco), displacing about 900 students who are currently awaiting arrangements to resume classes.
The Ghana National Fire Service has launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the Tolon SHS fire.
