Former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, has described the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as being divided into two factions, which he characterizes as a “fake” NPP and a “real” NPP.
According to him, he no longer identifies with what he calls the “fake” version of the party, arguing that its current mode of operation is deeply flawed and corrupt.
Speaking in an interview on Channel One TV on January 12, 2026, Professor Frimpong-Boateng criticized the party’s internal processes, citing the most recent NPP presidential primaries that produced the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 general elections.
He alleged that the conduct of the primaries was improper and inconsistent with the values the party once stood for.
“The present NPP is not the NPP I used to know. What I see now is fake. This is not the party I knew,” he stated.
When asked whether he still considered himself a member of the NPP, he replied, “Not the fake one. The real NPP exists, but it is virtual, with its members operating quietly in the background.”
Professor Frimpong-Boateng further accused party leaders of manipulating the flagbearer election through intimidation and inducements.
“Look at how they elected their last flagbearer. They twisted the arms of the weak, bribed delegates, and intimidated others to secure the flagbearer for the 2024 election. This is the beginning of corruption, and it should not be tolerated in any serious party or situation,” he said.
He also lamented the party’s failure to reflect on its poor electoral performance, noting that critical issues that contributed to the party’s heavy losses in the elections were never adequately addressed.
