The Central East Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, Superintendent Hannah Adjei, has urged commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as okada, in Kasoa to exercise discipline and strictly adhere to road traffic regulations following the recent passage of a bill legalising commercial motorcycle operations.
She emphasised that compliance with road regulations is critical to reducing accidents and ensuring the safety of both riders and other road users.
Superintendent Adjei made the call while speaking to Nana Ansah during a road safety education programme held with okada riders and their leaders in Kasoa. She cautioned riders against traffic offences such as jumping traffic lights, riding on zebra crossings, operating without helmets, and failing to use other safety gear, stressing that such actions remain illegal despite the new legislation.
According to her, adherence to safety regulations is mandatory, and riders who flout the law will face the appropriate sanctions to prevent road accidents.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, disclosed that additional training sessions would be organised for okada riders after the President gives assent to the bill passed by Parliament.
She also advised riders to fully comply with road traffic regulations and consistently wear protective gear while operating to safeguard their lives and those of passengers.
The engagement formed part of efforts to prepare okada riders for responsible operations under the new legal framework.
