Both factions in the long-standing Bawku conflict have publicly affirmed that they are “one people” with “no reason to be at war,” during a final mediation meeting chaired by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The sit-down, held on December 1, 2025, brought together representatives of the Mamprusi and Kusasi communities, marking the concluding stage of the Asantehene’s months-long initiative to help resolve the Bawku chieftaincy dispute.
A 30-member delegation led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of the Tarana Traditional Area, represented the Naayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, Overlord of Mamprugu. The Bawku Naba, Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, was represented by a team led by Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga. Hon. Cletus Avoka spoke on behalf of the Kusasi delegation, while Dr. Issah served as spokesperson for the Naayiri’s team.
After several months of separate consultations with both sides, Otumfuo brought them together for direct dialogue in what he described as a final push toward a lasting resolution to the tensions in the Bawku traditional area.
The meeting was calm and respectful, with both groups emphasizing their shared identity and the need to end hostilities.
His Majesty praised their maturity and urged them to prepare their followers to fully embrace peace. He reminded them that regardless of the final outcome, they must continue to coexist as one people.
The Asantehene revealed that he will submit his full report and recommendations to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days, expressing optimism that the President will swiftly convene a formal session to outline the next steps.
