Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢1 million with two sureties following his appearance before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.
The NPP regional chairman, who honoured an invitation from the CID on Monday, October 6, 2025, was questioned over allegations linking him to illegal mining activities.
According to police sources, three mining-related charges are expected to be filed against him at the High Court in Accra on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
Chairman Wontumi’s appearance followed an ultimatum issued by the Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who warned last Friday that the politician would face arrest if he failed to report to the police for questioning.
Speaking to journalists after the CID engagement, Wontumi’s lead counsel, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said his client had cooperated fully with investigators. He, however, cautioned against any attempt to revoke his client’s existing police enquiry bail, stressing that such a move would be “vigorously resisted.”
The case is expected to proceed to court as investigations continue.
