A group calling itself Concerned Ghanaian Youth organised a street walk to raise concerns about the recent influx of foreigners, particularly Nigerians, into the country. Urged the government to do proper documentation on foreigners.
The protest was led by Hassan Ayarega, Founder and Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC). During the protest, Ayarega urged the government to provide proper documentation for foreigners living in Ghana.
He believes that a robust system would enable the government to track the upsurge of crime and social vices such as kidnapping, prostitution, and human trafficking.
The presidential candidate for the 2024 election, Hassan Ayarega, also appealed to property owners (landlords) to demand documentation from foreigners, especially Nigerians, before leasing their properties.
He emphasised that despite Ghana’s membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the country has the right to establish its own protocols regarding foreign nationals without interfering with ECOWAS policies.
Ayarega expressed concerns that Nigerians have taken over the retail sector, which is constitutionally reserved for Ghanaians. He also alleged that some Nigerians are obtaining Ghanaian passports through dubious means.
He called on all Ghanaians to come out and voice their concerns about the perceived ill behaviours of some Nigerians in the country.
Peter Donkor, Spokesperson for Apex Ghana, emphasises the need for the government to gain clear insight into foreigners who consistently violate Ghana’s laws. He asserts that Ghanaians have entrusted the government to act on their behalf, and it is prudent for the government to address the concerns of its citizens.
Donkor highlights that Nigerians in Ghana have dominated the retail sector across all 16 regions, making it challenging for Ghanaian businesses to compete. He implies that government action is necessary to ensure a level playing field for local entrepreneurs.
