“My life is a miracle!” – Adina recalls escaping death as a baby during Liberia’s civil war

Award-winning Ghanaian singer-songwriter Adina Thembi has shared the extraordinary story of how she survived Liberia’s civil war as an infant, describing her life as undeniable evidence of God’s protection and mercy.

Speaking in an interview, the “Too Late” hitmaker recalled being born during one of Liberia’s most violent periods, a time when thousands of families were forced to flee their homes to escape the conflict. She said her survival remains one of the greatest blessings of her life.

“I was born in Liberia during the civil war; I could have died. That little girl on the back of my mother who didn’t cry when they were passing through the rebel camp because any sound could have literally woken them up to kill all of us,” she said.

Adina praised her mother for the sacrifices she made to keep the family alive, explaining that she would use her own body as a shield whenever gunfire erupted in an attempt to protect her children from danger.

“I’m the little girl that my mum would hear the gunshots, put my sister and I on the floor and cover us with her back so that when there’s any stray bullet, it won’t touch us, and I’m here today,” she recounted.

The singer said those painful memories continue to shape her outlook on life, adding that she constantly reflects on where she started whenever she encounters challenges.

“What again do I want from God? With that alone, I’m so grateful to God. Going through life and all the challenges, I always start from the beginning of how I came up and I’m here. The fact that I’m still here and counting is a testament that God is real,” she added.

Liberia’s civil war, which claimed thousands of lives and displaced countless families, forced many people to seek safety across West Africa. Adina’s story stands as a powerful reminder of resilience, sacrifice and hope, as she continues to inspire others with her journey from surviving conflict to becoming one of Ghana’s celebrated female musicians.
