A high-powered government delegation led by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, has held a closed-door meeting with the Overlord of Gonja, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, at the Jakpa Palace in Damongo.
The meeting was convened to foster dialogue, address outstanding disputes, and reinforce peace and stability in the Savannah Region, where renewed tensions have been reported in the Sawla-Bole area.
The delegation included key security chiefs: Chief of Defence Staff Lt. Gen. William Agyapong, Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohunu, Director-General of Prisons Patience Baffoe Bonnie, Comptroller-General of Immigration Samuel Amandu Bansintale, and Chief of Army Staff Major-General Lawrence Gbetamu Nana Adu-Gyamfi.
President John Mahama, who is currently on a state visit to Singapore, had earlier held a phone conversation with the Yagbonwura to discuss peace-building efforts. He subsequently dispatched the Interior Minister and the security delegation to work with the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), traditional rulers, and community stakeholders to consolidate peace initiatives.
The team is expected to deepen dialogue, sustain law and order, and ensure a long-term resolution to the recurring conflicts in the area.
