The Nkosuohene of the Asanteman Traditional Council, Nana Osei Kwame Kyeretwie, has lamented Ghana’s failure in tackling drug and substance abuse, particularly among the youth.
According to him, the growing menace poses a serious national security threat and must not be treated as business as usual.
In an interview with Oyerepa FM’s Okogyeabour Ocran, Nana Osei Kwame Kyeretwie called on the government and all stakeholders to adopt pragmatic measures to curb the situation. He expressed concern about the increasing illegal importation of hard drugs, including tramadol and opioids, which continue to infiltrate the country despite existing regulations.
During a courtesy call by officials of the Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre, the Nkosuohene urged border security agencies to strengthen surveillance to prevent the influx of illicit substances into the country.
Ahead of the upcoming campaign against opioid abuse, scheduled for August 22 in Kumasi, Nana Osei Kwame Kyeretwie commended Madam Lydia Abena Manu and the Willingway Recovery and Rehabilitation Center for their efforts in raising awareness. He also called for inclusive participation in the nationwide sensitisation exercise to help combat the growing drug abuse crisis.
