An Accra Circuit Court has granted bail to a hairdresser, Yayra Abiwu, alias AY, in the sum of GH¢150,000 with three sureties, over alleged threats against President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama.
Yayra, who was absent from Wednesday’s hearing after reportedly collapsing and being admitted to the Police Hospital, faces charges of abetment of crime, threat of death, and making electronic communications containing death threats. She has pleaded not guilty.
The court ordered her to deposit her passport with the registry and report to the police every Monday. Two of her sureties must be gainfully employed.
Her lawyer, Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah, argued that Yayra has no criminal record, is not a flight risk, and that bail should not serve as punishment, especially since her phones have already been seized for forensic examination.
Her alleged accomplice, Prince Ofori (Fante Comedy), a trader from Abossey Okai, also appeared before the court. He faces charges of offensive conduct and knowingly permitting his platform to be used for offensive communication. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of GH¢100,000 with three sureties, under similar conditions.
A third suspect, Alberta Okrah (Ghana Jollof), is currently at large.
Prosecutor ASP Emmanuel Haligah opposed Yayra’s bail, citing video evidence in which she allegedly threatened to “kill the President.”
The prosecution said Alberta and Ofori hosted a live TikTok discussion in August 2025, during which they made offensive remarks about NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi and later issued death threats against President Mahama and his wife. Yayra was said to have actively participated in the programme.
The case has been adjourned to August 25, 2025.
