The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has imposed an immediate ban on the use of motorbikes after 7:00 p.m. in key parts of the region, including the Asokore Mampong Municipality and the Kumasi Metropolis, following the fatal shooting of Alhaji Abdul-Malik Azenbge, Chief of Kusaase.
The directive, announced by Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene, was issued in a statement on Friday, July 25, 2025, as part of urgent security measures to restore calm in the wake of the assassination, which occurred in Asawase on Tuesday, July 22.
Dr. Amoakohene revealed that REGSEC held an emergency meeting on Wednesday, July 23, to assess the deteriorating security situation and adopt swift, decisive measures to protect lives and maintain order. The murder of the respected traditional leader has sparked unease in the community, prompting a region-wide security response.
Among the new measures, REGSEC has also:
- Banned the use of unlicensed motorbikes, as well as those without functioning lights.
- Prohibited motorbike riders from wearing smocks, which security officials say are increasingly being used to conceal weapons.
- Suspended the ongoing intertribal football competition indefinitely, citing concerns over rising inter-ethnic tensions and the risk of escalation.
Security forces, including the police and military, have been deployed in increased numbers to known hotspots in the region to prevent reprisal attacks and maintain law and order.
Speaking on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, Dr. Amoakohene extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Chief Azenbge and assured the public of the government’s firm commitment to justice.
REGSEC urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement as security operations are intensified, reaffirming its dedication to ensuring long-term peace and stability in the region.
