Members of the Minority in Parliament staged a walkout on Thursday, July 24, just moments before Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson began presenting the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review.
The protest was in response to the recent violence that erupted during the parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency—a development the Minority says undermines Ghana’s democratic principles.
Minority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said the caucus could not in good conscience take part in the budget deliberations while such incidents of electoral violence go unaddressed.
“As a caucus committed to democracy and rule of law, we cannot legitimize proceedings that ignore the serious violations witnessed during the rerun,” he stated.
The walkout was met with jeers and chants of “away, away, away” from the Majority side, expressing their disapproval as the Minority MPs filed out of the chamber.
In the aftermath of the boycott, the Minority has announced plans to submit a formal petition to key stakeholders, including President John Dramani Mahama, the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), and leading civil society organizations. The petition will call for accountability and reforms to prevent future incidents of election-related violence.
