Presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Francis Addai-Nimoh, has strongly criticised Members of Parliament (MPs) within the party who recently declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential bid ahead of the NPP’s internal elections.

Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with host Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, the former Mampong MP described the action by the MPs as “disgraceful, irrelevant, and unnecessary,” insisting that it undermines the principles of internal democracy and fairness within the party.

According to Addai-Nimoh, it is premature and inappropriate for sitting MPs to openly align themselves with a particular aspirant when the party has not officially opened nominations or kicked off its presidential primary process.

“The decision by the NPP MPs to declare their support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the Presidential primaries is just disgraceful, irrelevant, and unnecessary,” he fumed during the interview.

He said such endorsements only create division, heighten tension, and erode confidence in the party’s ability to conduct a free and fair contest. It does not reflect the values upon which our party was founded.

Background

Last week, a group of NPP Members of Parliament paid a courtesy call on former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, officially pledging their support for his bid to lead the party into the 2028 general elections. The visit, widely publicised across traditional and social media, has since sparked intense debate among party stakeholders and political observers.

The NPP is expected to hold its presidential primaries on January 31, 2026, as the party prepares to elect a new flagbearer to succeed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who will complete his second and final term in office.

While Dr. Bawumia remains a leading contender, other aspirants, including Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Francis Addai-Nimoh, have expressed strong intentions to contest the flagbearership, calling for an open, transparent, and competitive process.
