Kumawood actor Papa Kumasi has criticised a recent stakeholders’ meeting convened by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, aimed at reviving Ghana’s indigenous film industry.
Speaking in an interview with Ghpage, Papa Kumasi questioned both the inclusiveness and the efficacy of such gatherings.
“I have seen that they held a meeting on June 1—Kumawood people are meeting and all that,” he remarked.
“But the problem here is: can anyone attend the meeting, or is it limited to a few people?” The actor queried.
Dr. Amoakohene’s June 1 forum brought together a selection of actors, actresses, producers, and directors to discuss strategies for resuscitating Kumawood, which has struggled with funding shortages, distribution challenges, and declining audience numbers in recent years. While the minister stressed the government’s commitment to supporting local film production, Papa Kumasi argued that round‑table discussions alone will not address the industry’s deeper problems.
“Meeting us every time won’t solve anything,” he warned.
Instead, Papa Kumasi urged the minister and other leaders to probe the root causes of Kumawood’s downturn.
“They should investigate what caused the movie industry to mitigate, instead of focusing on what I consider irrelevant meetings,” he said.
