The Asante Abuakwa Circuit Court has sentenced a 38-year-old manageress, Akua Darkoah Asamoah, to five years in prison for embezzling GH¢221,937.75 from FOE Lotto Limited, located at Santasi in Kumasi.
Asamoah pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on her own plea, according to a report by the Ghana News Agency (GNA).
Presenting the case, Police Detective Inspector Alexander Agbekpornu informed the court—presided over by Mr. Jephthah Appau—that the complainant, the General Manager of FOE Lotto Limited (a subsidiary of Lotto and Lotteries), filed the report after discovering discrepancies in the company’s accounts.
Asamoah had been appointed as the manageress of the company’s Atwima-Techiman branch. Between March 22 and June 2, 2024, she allegedly diverted funds collected from sub-agents, which were intended to be remitted to the company’s head office in Kumasi.
The total amount misappropriated was GH¢221,937.75.
Following an internal audit, a formal complaint was lodged with the Suntreso Police. Upon her arrest, Asamoah admitted to the offence in her caution statement.
The prosecution revealed that a forensic audit uncovered further fraudulent activities. After the announcement of winning numbers, the convict forged lotto tickets to falsely claim winnings in a bid to conceal the theft.
Subsequent investigations led to her being charged and arraigned before the court, where she was convicted and sentenced.
