The leadership of Kantamanto market has vehemently denied accusations of refusing to provide an account of donations received for fire victims following the recent fire incident.
The controversy arose after a group of Kantamanto traders publicly demanded that the market leadership provide a transparent account of the donations received.
During Oyerepa news reporter Bernard K Dadzie’s visit, Chairman Michael Oppong gave assurances that all donated funds have been securely deposited into a bank account, with a promise to provide a full account in due time.
According to Oppong, some of the donations have already been utilized to purchase wood and materials for ongoing reconstruction efforts. “No one will embezzle the funds. We are committed to transparency and will not mismanage the donations,” he emphasized.
To ensure accountability, the leadership has established a nine-member committee to oversee all donations, income, and expenditure. The committee will organize a general meeting with the fire victims to provide a detailed account of the funds.
Chairman Michael Oppong advised traders to consult the market leadership with any challenges, citing concerns over the numerous complaints. He assured, “We will account for all donations received and distribute the remaining funds to the affected victims.”
For his part, Mr. Adakwa Yiadom, a committee member, stated that a detailed account of donations will be provided after the project’s completion. He assured that the committee has maintained transparency in receiving donations, always doing so openly in front of traders.
According to Yiadom, the nine-member committee has a designated finance officer, Aikins, who is responsible for depositing received donations into the bank.
He explained that when materials like wood are purchased, the leadership sends a weigh bill to the finance team for payment, ensuring a clear audit trail.
