Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, a distinguished academic and Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has strongly denounced a recent incident that took place in the Obuasi East Constituency.
It has been reported that two military officers were attacked by members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a polling station in the Obuasi East constituency during Ghana’s 2024 general elections. Eyewitnesses have stated that the altercation began when armed soldiers arrived at the polling centre, despite assurances from the Ghana Armed Forces that no military personnel would be present at polling stations.
An NDC Communication Officer, reportedly demanded that the soldiers leave immediately, warning that failure to comply would result in police involvement.
Tensions then rose when the soldiers refused to leave, leading to a physical confrontation between them and the NDC official. Other party members joined in, escalating the situation further.
During a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time on Thursday, Professor Marfo expressed his strong disapproval of the NDC Communication Officer’s actions, stating that the soldiers should not have been provoked to violence.
“I learned certain NDC members attacked two soldiers and I was like what were the soldiers holding the guns for?
Why didn’t they pull the trigger?
I was so pained that, the soldiers allowed the NDC members to attack them, irrespective of their status.
The soldiers should have shot their NDC attackers.
Prof Marfo argued that the security agencies in the country are being paid with tax payer’s money and have therefore been mandated to protect the lives and properties of the nation and should not be taken for granted in any form.
“Because there is a certain image that should not be taken from the security agencies.
We’re paying the security to protect us and if they turn out to be overpowered by civilians, then it means we don’t have any protection.” He mentioned.
