Renowned lawyer and outgoing President of the Ghana Bar Association, Yaw Acheampong Boafo, has sparked a new conversation in the music and entertainment world by comparing two of Ghana’s most celebrated music legends, Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi.
In a recent statement, Boafo likened the comparison between the two highlife icons to comparing Real Madrid to Accra Hearts of Oak, suggesting that while both are outstanding, there is a significant gap between them.
In an interview on StarrChat, the outgoing president made the sports analogy to express the differences between the two musicians. “Comparing Daddy Lumba to Kojo Antwi is like comparing Real Madrid and Hearts of Oak. They are both excellent in their own right, but there’s a gap,” Boafo explained.
The debate between Daddy Lumba and Kojo Antwi has been a long-standing one, with fans often divided over who reigns supreme in the highlife and contemporary Ghanaian music scene. Both artists have shaped the industry with their distinctive sounds and timeless hits.
Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, is renowned for his diverse musical styles, from traditional highlife to modern afrobeat. On the other hand, Kojo Antwi, also known as “Mr. Music Man,” is celebrated for his smooth, reggae-inspired highlife melodies. Songs such as ‘Medofo Pa’ and ‘Amirika’ have cemented his legacy as one of the pioneers of contemporary Ghanaian music. Antwi’s unique fusion of highlife with reggae and soul rhythms has earned him accolades in Ghana and internationally.
In comparing the two musical giants to football teams, Boafo highlighted the global reputation and legacy of Real Madrid, one of the most successful football clubs in the world, known for its numerous UEFA Champions League titles and dominance in European football. Although deeply loved by its passionate fan base, Accra Hearts of Oak has not reached the same level of international recognition or success.
