The Chiefs of the Nzema Traditional Area have requested an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for comments made about Dr. Kwame Nkrumah during his unveiling ceremony in Kumasi on July 9.
Speaking on behalf of the Nzema chiefs, Nana Kwasi Kutuah V, expressed their rejection of NAPO’s initial apology.
The traditional leader deemed NAPO’s statement as disrespectful and a display of disregard towards the people of Nkroful and the Western Region.
The chief emphasized that the apology issued by NAPO in a statement was inadequate and not suitable for acceptance by the traditional leaders of Nkroful.
Therefore, he urged NAPO to personally come and offer an apology to make amends with the people of Nkroful.
“We believe that the statement made by Dr Opoku Prempeh isn’t something to be said. He has disrespected Ghanaians, Nzema, Western Region and the people of Nkroful.
“We have heard he has written a letter to show how remorseful he is, but we want him to personally come to Nzema to render an apology to the chiefs and the family before we accept his apology. If he doesn’t obey this directive, we will never accept his apology,” Nana Kwasi Kutuah stated.
It will be recalled that Dr. Opoku Prempeh, addressing a rally of NPP sympathisers at his unveiling, said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has surpassed all past presidents, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in terms of development and achievements.
His comments championed calls for his resignation by a section of the public.
However, in a statement to apologise, NAPO said he didn’t mean to denigrate the former president or any other president.
His statement further clarified that his views reflected his own personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact, relative to other presidents in the country’s history.
