Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS) at KNUST, Professor Charles Ofusu Marfo, emphasized that Ghanaian voters should not view the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a serious contender in the 2024 polls if they simply mimic the actions of their rivals, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Professor Marfo expressed his views during a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time on Wednesday, April 25, 2024.
He pointed out that if the NPP, led by Dr. Bawumia, were to choose a female candidate as their running mate, it would indicate that they are merely following the lead of the NDC.
He stressed the importance of the NPP selecting a candidate who can rival the capabilities of Professor Jane of the NDC.
However, Professor Marfo cautioned against choosing a female candidate solely in response to the NDC’s selection of Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as their running mate. Doing so, he argued, would demonstrate a lack of vision and undermine the NPP’s credibility.
“If NPP selects a woman as running mate, it’s going to be clear that, it’s because of Jane….And we should not be considering such a party as a serious one. Jane has unsettled them, she has decapitated their strategies.”
Prof Marfo suggested that the NPP must listen to the calls of the people and consider a man from the Ashanti Region who is vociferous and can match, the NDC running mate.
When he was asked by Kwesi Parker Wilson, who the Dr Bawumia should consider as running mate, he said; “they should come out as soon as possible to point to Mathew Opoku Prempeh who is a young, has a lot of life ahead him and that if he’s successful as running he has a future in terms of age-wise.”
