The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed satisfaction with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akufo Dampare’s assurance that the military will only be deployed as a last resort during the December 7 elections.
The IGP, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the National Election Security Task Force, has made it clear that only he has the authority to order military intervention.
This assurance was given during a meeting between the National Elections Security TaskForce and political parties, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and stability throughout the electoral process.
This clarification has been welcomed by the NDC which views it as a crucial step in ensuring the peaceful conduct of the elections. The party has also commended the IGP for emphasizing that no individual or group will be above the law, regardless of their political affiliation.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for transparency in the transmission of election results, proposing that the Electoral Commission (EC) should not only fax but also email the results to the EC Chairperson, with copies sent to all 12 presidential candidates.
According to Dr. Omane Boamah, director of elections and IT at the NDC, this measure will help prevent potential interference with the electronic transmission of results.
Dr. Omane Boamah also raised concerns about the handling of coalition centers, particularly the constituency coalition centers. The party has suggested that polling agents should receive physical copies of the pink sheets, rather than just electronic versions, to prevent any potential alterations or disputes.
These demands come amidst growing concerns about the credibility and transparency of Ghana’s electoral process. The NDC’s proposals aim to ensure that the upcoming elections are free, fair, and transparent, and that the results reflect the true will of the Ghanaian people.
