Dr. Lawrence Agyeman Serebour, Medical Director of St. Michael’s Specialist Hospital in Lapaz, Accra, has sounded the alarm on the alarming rise of heart disease, which claims over 20 million lives annually.
To combat this leading cause of death worldwide, Dr Serebour stresses the urgent need for effective health policies and awareness campaigns.
At a recent free Heart Health screening event marking World Heart Day, Dr. Serebour cautioned that smoking shisha for just one hour is equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes, posing grave health risks.
“Heart disease is a ticking time bomb. We must act now to raise awareness, promote healthy lifestyles, and reduce the alarming number of deaths,” Dr. Serebour.
Some participants expressed gratitude for the initiative, stating that such programs are crucial for educating the community about the importance of regular cardiac checkups.
They hope St. Michael’s will continue to host similar events, reinforcing the hospital’s commitment to promoting heart health and wellness in the community.
