Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Subin Constituency, JB Danquah, has called for a complete reset of the party’s leadership and a transformation in its electoral processes.
Speaking on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Danquah voiced strong criticisms of the current leadership, including President Nana Akufo-Addo and Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, the NPP Regional Chairman for Ashanti.
“The party must be reset, and a good number of the leadership must change. Some of the leadership must go, and the grassroots must also renew their mindset,” Danquah asserted.
He further criticized the influence of money in the party’s internal elections, a practice he referred to as “monecracy.”
Danquah warned that unless significant reforms are undertaken, the party risks further alienating its grassroots supporters.
“The way we elect our MPs and Flagbearers must change completely. If we don’t change them, monecracy, which is collapsing this party, won’t stop,” he said.
He argued that the focus on financial power rather than merit is preventing the election of strong candidates. “Because of monecracy, we don’t elect good candidates, and this is affecting the party. We don’t elect candidates whom the grassroots like, and it’s the reason why many didn’t vote,” Danquah noted.
The former parliamentary candidate singled out Wontumi for particular criticism, saying, “Wontumi has no business leading the party in the Ashanti Region. He has no business leading the party at any level. He and Akufo-Addo must go together.”
Danquah’s remarks come at a time when the NPP faces internal challenges and increasing scrutiny over its ability to retain the loyalty of its supporters ahead of the 2024 general elections. His call for a leadership overhaul and reforms in party processes highlights the growing discontent among some members of the party.
