Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Dr Serebour Quaicoe has refuted claims by the public that the Ghana card will be used for voting in the 2024 general elections.
Mr Quaicoe said the Ghana card is only being used as a requirement for Voter ID card acquisition
According to him, the Electoral Commission (EC) is not compiling new Voter’s register but is issuing new cards to people who have attained 18 years.
He said there are four hundred and fifty thousand (450,000) People who attain 18 years annually. And for that matter, the Commission is looking forward to registering 1.8 million new entrants into the Voter Register in the next two and half years.
Explaining further on the Oyerepa Breakfast show, Tuesday, August 9 2022, he further explained that, the exercise to be carried on is a continuous registration and not a compilation of New Voter’s Register.
“For records, we are not embarking on the compilation of new voters registration. What we are doing is the continuation exercise which is capturing the new entrants who are 18 years of age which requires the use of the Ghana card,” He said.
He further stated that they have consulted and written to all the political parties for further engagement on the matter.
