Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of Ghana’s biggest opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that his party will not stop mining in the country should they come to power in 2024.
Recall that, President Akufo-Addo since assuming office in 2016 is combating illegal mining which is destroying rich farmlands and water bodies, yet his mission has not been accomplished.
Speaking on Oyerepap Breakfast Show, Friday, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, popularly known as General Mosquito stated that, his party will not stop mining.
He said, no government can stop mining in Ghana but appropriate measures could be put in place to guide how the country’s mineral resources should be extracted.
“We won’t stop mining, we’ll extract the resources. The extraction isn’t the dilemma but the method is the problem.”
“If anyone promises to stop mining in Ghana, that person is a liar.” Asiedu Nketiah emphatically stated.
The NDC General Secretary added that most of the youth in the various mining communities largely depend on mining for survival therefore should his party assume office in 2024, it will put appropriate measures in place for sustainable mining.
He asserted that, if the NPP government wants to stop illegal mining, it should rather deal with kingpins within the party and put guidelines for miners to follow.
