Political science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako Boah, has said that Ghana could have had these general elections cancelled if we were to be a serious country.
According to the political lecturer, all the current happenings in our country are indirectly telling us that our democracy is under serious threat, especially with the amount of money people pay to win power in the country now.
Speaking in an interview on Oyerepa Breakfast show with Nana Yaw Mensah Joel, he expressed his dissatisfaction with how we elect our representatives, especially parliamentary candidates, where the highest bidder wins and it has now become the new face of politics in Ghana.
The political analyst stressed that the involvement of money in our political space today is only giving room for corruption in the country, which poses a threat to our democracy.
“Now huge money wins elections in Ghana, and that is why many people are encouraged to engage in corruption because we are just finding excuses for these practices,” he said.
Adding that for us to restore our democracy as a country, it would be better if we even cancel these upcoming elections because of the issues surrounding it, which, to the best of his knowledge, we can let some people take over the power for some time while we make amends to our democracy.
“The court can appoint a caretaker government in such cases when his term is over and declare it as an emergency…we can even make the speaker of parliament a temporary President for somebody else to take over his position as well for that short time for us to see the difference,” he stated.
He also argued that it is time we take retrospective measures to address the delegate system in our politics today, which is now encouraging corruption in Ghana.
“Why allow a number of people to choose the person who represents a whole constituency and not?”
