Although many Ghanaians have raised concerns about how politicians spend money in elections just to win power.
A lot of these power-hungry politicians seem not to bother about the canker, they go to the extreme of sharing thousands of money to electorates, delegates to vote for them (Vote buying).
Lots of politicians especially within the New Patriotic Party, NPP, countless times have confessed to paying money to delegates to vote for them.
In the just-ended NPP Regional Executive Elections in Kumasi, many of the aspirants supposedly bribed delegates to get their votes.
In the audio that was played on Oyerepa FM, a popular NPP member who contested for the 2nd Vice-Chair position, Abraham Boadi, well known as ‘Opooman’ revealed that after the NPP regional elections, each delegate went home with an amount not less than GHc30, 000.
However, Evans Kwafo, Personal Aide of NPP General Secretary John Boadu believes that it is not a crime for politicians to bribe delegates or electorates for votes (VOTE BUYING).
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Show, Wednesday 1st June 2022, Evans Kwafo said “Everybody (politician) gives money to delegates for votes. Myself, I give money to people. So it’s not a crime to give money to delegates. It’s even good to share money.”
He added that, despite the consequences of politicians bribing delegates to vote for them, that is unable to influence delegates’ decision to vote for them (politician).
“The fact that a politician gives money to delegates doesn’t mean they can influence their decisions. They can’t ‘buy their minds’.” Evans Kwafo stated.
He admitted that all aspirants of the elections paid sums of money to delegates for votes in the Ashanti region.
“Each aspirant paid money to delegates, but the competent ones won; NPP won.” John Boadu’s Aide, Evans Kwafo emphatically stated.
