Dr. Eric Bempong, a lecturer at KAAF University, has advised former Assin Central Member of Parliament (MP), Kennedy Agyapong, to reconsider his presidential ambition, stating that his political career may be at risk.
Kennedy Agyapong, who contested in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries ahead of the 2024 elections, has expressed interest in running again in 2028.
However, Dr. Bempong believes recent developments, particularly a defamation lawsuit against him in the United States, could damage his chances.
Agyapong, along with social media commentator Frederick Asamoah, was recently ordered by a Superior Court in New Jersey to pay $18 million in damages to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas. The ruling followed a legal battle over defamatory statements made during a 2021 interview that was broadcast on social media.
Interestingly, a court in Ghana had earlier ruled in favor of Agyapong on the same case, with the judge controversially labeling Anas as a “terrorist.”
Reacting to the US judgment during a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time chaired by Kwesi Parker Wilson, Dr. Bempong expressed disappointment in the Ghanaian court’s ruling.
“I said Ken will end his political career the moment he engages in a banter with Anas Aremeyaw Anas,” Dr. Bempong stated. “I love Ken as a human being and admire his entrepreneurial skills, but he is not fit to lead Ghana. He should forget about his presidential ambition.” He said.
Dr. Bempong’s remarks add to the ongoing debate about Kennedy Agyapong’s political future and the impact of his legal battles on his credibility as a presidential candidate.
