Professor Charles Ofosu Marfo, the Provost of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CoHSS) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has expressed his disapproval of recent government initiatives targeting female porters, commonly referred to as Kayayes, in Accra.
As the former President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Professor Marfo advised Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to reconsider the allocation of state resources towards developing facilities for Kayayes in Accra.
During a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time Professor Marfo argued that such projects, which include the construction of hostels and training programs, may inadvertently promote rural-urban migration, contradicting the nation’s objectives of reducing this phenomenon.
