The national chairman for the Local Rice Producers Association, Nana Agyei Ayeh II, has debunked the perception that local rice is not of good quality and taste as compared to imported rice and is one of the best in the world.
Speaking in an interview with Kwesi Parker Wilson on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, he added that locally produced foods are healthier than imported ones.
According to him, local rice is consumed within 12 months, whereas imported rice arrives in the country after a minimum of 5 years. Comparatively, local rice tastes better and has a higher nutritional value than imported rice.
He again said the local rice has a higher sustainability rate than the imported rice because the grains are lighter. Therefore, after consumption, it can sustain you for a long period of time.
Nana Ayeh II also mentioned that there have been some improvements in the reduction of post-harvest losses. There are some local rice brands and unbranded ones as well, and it is up to the customer to purchase their preferred choice.
He did, however, acknowledge the shortcomings of the local manufacturing industry, including a lack of combine harvesters and other post-production machinery.
