The founder and leader of the All People’s Congress, Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has urged the government to take urgent action to address Ghana’s debt crisis. Dr. Ayariga expressed alarm at the significant increase in Ghana’s debt stock and emphasized the need for immediate intervention.
He highlighted that Ghana’s debt has risen from GH122 billion in 2017 to GH638 billion currently, resulting in minimal development despite extensive borrowing. This has led to the abandonment of major infrastructure projects, causing significant inconvenience to the public.
Dr. Ayariga attributed the root cause of the crisis to unnecessary borrowing and mismanagement of government funds. He criticized the lack of accountability and transparency in government operations, which has exacerbated the situation and posed a serious threat to the nation’s financial stability.
During a press conference today, the 2024 APC Presidential candidate stressed the importance of conducting a comprehensive audit of all government loans and expenditures to identify inefficiencies and potential mismanagement. He believes that this audit will provide valuable insights into Ghana’s financial status and guide future decision-making processes.
Dr. Ayariga called for the implementation of measures to enhance transparency and accountability in financial management. This includes establishing clear guidelines for the allocation and use of government funds, as well as ensuring proper documentation and reporting of all financial transactions.
