The Supreme Court has unanimously rejected an objection raised by former Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame, regarding the involvement of Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie in the panel hearing the case concerning the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Mr. Dame had argued that it was procedurally improper for Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to both empanel and preside over a case directly involving the substantive Chief Justice. He described this as “unprecedented” and warned that such a move could erode public trust in the independence of the judiciary.
After a brief recess, the Supreme Court panel reconvened and swiftly overruled the objection. The justices ruled that the concerns raised by Mr. Dame were not sufficient to disqualify Justice Baffoe-Bonnie from presiding over the proceedings, affirming that due judicial process would be maintained throughout the case.
The panel currently overseeing the case includes Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Justice Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Justice Yonny Kulendi, Justice Amadu Tanko, and Justice Ernest Gaewu.
This ruling clears the way for the continuation of legal arguments regarding the controversial suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo.
