The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, has issued a firm warning to cattle owners, declaring that beginning May 1, 2025, any stray cattle found within the city limits will be seized, slaughtered, and donated as food to inmates at the Kumasi Central Prison.
Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, the Mayor described the presence of freely roaming cattle in the metropolis as a serious public nuisance and an affront to the city’s dignity.
“There is another issue I would like to address,” Mr. Boadi stated. “If you own cattle and they are found straying within the jurisdiction of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, know that from May 1, they will be killed and sent to the Kumasi Central Prison for consumption.”
He specifically highlighted the stretch from the Kumasi Airport to the Manhyia Palace as an area of concern, stressing that visitors to the city should not be greeted by the sight of livestock and their droppings along major roads.
“I cannot allow a situation where visitors arriving from the airport to Manhyia Palace are welcomed by cattle faeces. It’s unacceptable in a city like Kumasi,” he emphasized.
The Mayor called on all cattle rearers to relocate their animals outside of the metropolitan area and to ensure proper control measures are in place to prevent them from wandering into public spaces.
The directive forms part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing sanitation, order, and the image of Kumasi, which the Mayor has frequently referred to as the “Garden City of West Africa.”
