The Mamponteng Jubilee Market, which was started during erstwhile Former President Kuffuor’s administration, has come to a standstill after 17 years of abandonment.
The project, which led to the evacuation of the traders to pave the way for the construction of this Jubilee Market, has now placed numerous traders in the township who have no alternative space to ply their trade.
These traders, having been left with no option, decided to trade under an Electricity Palon and could result in a national disaster if proper measures are not immediately taken to address this issue.
However, information gathered by Oyerepa Breakfast hosted by Nana Yaw Mensah Joel revealed that the foundation was laid by President Kuffuor as part of the projects to mark the 50th anniversary in Ghana and couldn’t see its completion until the NDC took over the government.
The NDC administration also did not think about the project until 2012 when they found out that the project has failed an integrity test, leading to the pull-down of the whole structure to start a new building one. For more than a decade now, the project has since been abandoned to rot in the bush while traders are forced to trade along the dusty road.
According to information gathered, a sum of GHC4 Million was released as part payment for the construction of the Mamponteng Jubilee Market in 2012.
The project is currently at a standstill due to the inability of the government to release the remaining GHC4 million to complete the project.
Interestingly, after six years of abandoning the project, the cost has jumped to GHC24 Million cedis for the completion of the market.
The Jubilee Market project, housing more than 200 shops for the past decade, now serves as a haven for the homeless and armed robbers.
The dangerous aspect of it all is that these traders are forced to occupy a portion of the narrow space under an electricity power gridline, which poses a serious risk.
