One person has been confirmed dead and nine others rescued following a tragic road accident on the Cape Coast–Takoradi highway near the Elmina checkpoint.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, involved a Toyota Hiace minibus with registration number GR 1464-18 and a Zonda truck bearing registration GN 4197-21. According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the collision was caused by wrongful overtaking by the Hiace driver.
Firefighters from the University of Cape Coast (UCC) Station, led by ACFO II Merinder Mary Attiga-Mensah, responded swiftly to a distress call at approximately 3:25 p.m.
Upon arrival, the team secured the crash scene, managed traffic flow, and called for backup from the Regional Headquarters Rescue Team.
Rescue personnel successfully extricated nine victims trapped in the wreckage. They were immediately handed over to the National Ambulance Service and transported to the UCC Hospital for medical attention.
The driver of the Toyota Hiace sustained only minor injuries. However, one passenger was found unresponsive at the scene and was later pronounced dead at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.
The Toyota Hiace suffered extensive damage, while the Zonda truck was partially affected.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash as they urge drivers to exercise caution and avoid reckless maneuvers on the road.
