In a show of discontent, a group of irate members from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region have locked up the party’s regional office.
This protest action is a response to the arrest of Alhaji Abdul Hamid, popularly known as Alhaji Gbewaa, who serves as a regional Vice Chairman of the party in the region.
The protesters, with red armbands on, and engaged in chanting and drumming, barricaded various offices at the regional headquarters using wood and padlocks.
The arrest of the Vice Chairman was reportedly carried out by the Northern Regional police command on Monday, January 15, 2024, following allegations of him assaulting the NDC regional treasurer, Hajia Shamima Yakubu, during a regional executive meeting over the weekend.
Hajia Shamima Yakubu was visibly injured, resulting in profuse bleeding and facial disfigurement, prompting her to report the incident to the police and seek medical attention.
Subsequently, the Vice Chairman was detained to assist in the ongoing police investigation, leading to the displeasure of the party youth in the region.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Yakubu Haruna, the Chairman of the NDC Gbewaa Youth, demanded the immediate release of the Vice Chairman.
Mr Haruna went on to issue a warning of potential further unrest if Alhaji Gbewaa is not released from custody by the close of the day.
