The National Democratic Congress has called on President Akufo-Addo to immediately halt any plans to appoint Supreme Court Judges.
According to them, the recent decision by President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo to appoint 5 Judges to the Apex Court of the land is unconstitutional and an assault on democracy.
Speaking at a press briefing, General Secretary of NDC, Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey alluded that the appointment of Supreme Court Judges must strictly follow constitutional procedures, including consultation with the Judicial Council.
He therefore called on the Chief Justice to return the unconstitutional requests to appoint additional judges and ensure future actions strictly aligned with legal and ethical standards.
He is of the view that the government must engage with civil society, legal professionals and the public to discuss and review the process of judicial appointments to restore public trust.
According to him, future judicial appointments must be based on merits, experience and integrity rather than political affiliations or loyalty.
The Chief Executive Officer of the NDC called on Ghanaians to raise their voice to ensure that institutions remain independent to allow democracy to remain strong.
