The Ashanti Regional Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) Lawyer Kwame Adom Appaiah has chastised former President John Mahama over his comment about the Judicial Service of Ghana.
The current judiciary is facing a credibility crisis as a result of perceived hostility and political bias in legal proceedings, especially at the apex courts.
Speaking at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Lawyers Conference held over the weekend, the former president criticized the Judicial Service, stating that only a new Chief Justice can repair the ‘broken image’ of the judiciary.
“There is therefore the urgent need for the Ghanaian Judiciary to work to win the trust and confidence of the citizenry and erase the widely held perception of hostility and political bias in legal proceedings at the highest courts of the land.
“Unfortunately, we have no hope that the current leadership of our judiciary can lead such a process of change. We can only hope that a new Chief Justice will lead a process to repair the broken image that our judiciary has acquired over the last few years,” He said.
Reacting to the ex-president’s statement, Lawyer Adom Appiah said he (the former president) is calling for violence.
“When an ordinary person makes such comment it’s ok but if statesman says this then he is calling for violence because he’s telling people not to trust the judicial but resort to violence in solving issues”. The NPP secreatary said.
He questioned whether the ex-president Mahama is the only one who lost a case in the court.
“When Mahama gets favourable decisions, the institutions are sacrosanct but if they do not go for him… they are devil, he should stop that. Is he the only person who has lost a case in court? He should stop that.” He stated
