The Member of Parliament for Oforikrom Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Dr Emmanuel Kwabena Marfo has indicated that parliament should have declined the invitation of the UK parliament in connection to the passing of the Anti -LGBTQI Bill.
The UK’s Parliament has invited members of the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Ghana’s Parliament, led by Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi to a meeting over the anti-LGBTQI Bill today, Monday 13th June 2022.
The anti-LGBTQI+ bill seeks to criminalise the activities of homosexuals in Ghana, and even seeks to criminalise any form of advocacy in support of homosexuals.
Many people are of the view that, once the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee of Ghana have been invited by the UK, the committee could be influenced to throw away the anti-gay bill and pass the LGBTQI Bill which will pave way for homosexuality in the country.
Speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Dr Marfo stated that, the failure of the committee to honour the invitation would have meant that the LGBTQI Bill is not a priority of the country because there are many important issues to deal with as a nation.
“The invitation should have been declined so it will send a message to the UK parliament that there are many things the country needs to work on”. He told Kwasi Parker Wilson, host of the show.
He reiterated that “homosexuality is constitutionally inappropriate and against our cultural norms and values as a country.”
He also stated that the legislature has more power on passing the Anti-Gay bill than the government but the bill has been delayed because of the E-levy saga.
