Heavy rainfall disrupts commute, strands workers and students in Accra
Hours of heavy rainfall have left many workers stranded at home and at bus stops after widespread flooding hit several parts of the Greater Accra Region on Monday morning.
The downpour, which began on the night of Sunday, June 28, and continued into the early hours of Monday, June 29, 2026, submerged roads and homes across a number of communities, disrupting movement and daily activities.
Videos shared on social media show residents trapped in their homes, wading through floodwaters, and struggling to navigate inundated streets as flood-prone areas were overwhelmed.
Among the hardest-hit areas are Kasoa, Kaneshie, First Light, Sakaman, Dzorwulu, Circle, Adabraka, Alajo, Weija, Pantang and Ofankor, with residents posting updates and footage highlighting the extent of the flooding.
The flooding is expected to significantly disrupt work and business activities across the capital, as many commuters remain unable to leave their homes or travel to their workplaces.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has forecast more thunderstorms and rain across much of southern Ghana today.
According to the agency, rainfall currently affecting parts of the coast and inland areas is expected to persist throughout the day. GMet explained that a weak to moderate rainstorm moving from the Togo-Benin coast is forecast to spread westwards, increasing cloud cover and triggering thunderstorms with rain across southern Ghana from this morning into the afternoon.
The agency also advised residents in forest and mountainous areas to expect patches of mist or fog during the day.
Below are the areas expected to experience heavy rainfall, cloudy conditions and mist, according to GMet.
Flooding has affected parts of the Tse Addo community following the early morning downpour, leaving several roads waterlogged and making movement difficult for both motorists and pedestrians as residents struggle to navigate the area.
