Greater Accra Minister directs MMDCEs to intensify flood rescue operations
The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to immediately activate emergency response measures in flood-affected communities following Monday’s heavy rains.
In a statement, the Minister expressed sympathy to residents who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships due to the flooding, assuring them that the government is committed to supporting affected communities.
“My heart goes out to all individuals and families who have been affected by this unfortunate incident. I sincerely sympathise with those who have suffered losses, displacement and other hardships, and I want to assure every affected resident that you are not alone,” the statement read.
Ms Ocloo stressed that protecting lives remains the government’s top priority and instructed all MMDCEs to work closely with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), emergency responders and technical officers to intensify rescue and relief efforts.
She said the assemblies have been tasked with evacuating residents trapped by floodwaters where necessary, assessing the extent of damage and providing immediate assistance to affected persons.
“Every MMDCE is expected to remain fully engaged until the situation is brought under control. This is a time for decisive leadership and swift action,” the Minister stated.
According to the statement, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council is collaborating with NADMO, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Police Service and other emergency agencies to coordinate rescue operations and safeguard lives and property.
With the Ghana Meteorological Agency forecasting additional rainfall, residents have been urged to remain vigilant by avoiding unnecessary travel, staying away from flood-prone areas, drains and fast-flowing floodwaters, and remaining indoors where possible.
The Minister also appealed to parents and guardians to keep children away from floodwaters and prevent them from crossing flooded roads or drains.
Residents requiring emergency assistance have been advised to contact NADMO on 0302 772395, 0299 344030, or via WhatsApp on 055 160 9393.
Ms Ocloo further called on the public to cooperate with emergency personnel and comply with all safety directives as authorities continue efforts to manage the flooding.
“Together with our Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and our emergency response agencies, we will continue to work tirelessly to protect lives, assist those in need, and support our communities through this challenging period,” the statement concluded.
