The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has arrested three individuals suspected of involvement in an attempt to smuggle about five million tramadol tablets into Ghana, with the consignment estimated to have a street value of GH¢100 million.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook page on Friday, July 17, 2026, NACOC said the suspects were apprehended at the Accra International Airport during an intelligence-driven operation.

The Commission explained that its officers intercepted a shipment believed to contain large quantities of illicit pharmaceutical substances.

“The suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at Accra International Airport in Accra after officials intercepted a shipment believed to contain the illicit pharmaceutical drugs,” NACOC stated.

According to the Commission, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt drug trafficking activities and protect public health and national security.

Preliminary investigations by NACOC suggest that the intercepted tramadol shipment was intended for distribution in Ghana and potentially other countries within the West African sub-region.

The Commission added that investigators suspect the seizure could be connected to a wider drug trafficking network and are working to identify other individuals linked to the operation.

NACOC said the three suspects will be brought before court after investigations are completed, in accordance with Ghana’s narcotics laws.

The seized tramadol tablets have been preserved as evidence, while forensic examinations and document reviews continue to support the ongoing investigation.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and ensuring that persons involved in the illegal trade face the full consequences of the law.

NACOC also called on the public to remain alert and support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious activities.
