Dr Eric Bempong, a lecturer at KAAF University, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) over its declaration of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.
Ofori-Atta has been accused by Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng of alleged involvement in multiple corruption cases during his tenure in government. After repeatedly refusing to appear for questioning, the OSP officially labelled him a fugitive.
However, speaking on Oyerepa Breakfast Time, Dr Bempong argued that the OSP’s choice of words was too harsh, considering that Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives had made his whereabouts known.
“To declare someone a ‘fugitive’ or ‘wanted’ is too harsh. Honestly, I’m concerned about the use of the word ‘fugitive,’” he stated.
According to Dictionary (Oxford Languages) ‘Fugitive’ is a person who has escaped from captivity or is in hiding.
For this reason, Dr Bempong said, “Where is the fugitive in this case? His lawyers have already disclosed his whereabouts. If the OSP requires further details, they can obtain them from his legal team. So why declare him a fugitive?” he questioned.
Dr. Bempong also raised concerns about the timing of the OSP’s declaration.
“For all this while, what changed? Why is the OSP now declaring Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive?” he asked.
