The Running Mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-
Agyemang, has assured Ghanaians that the Free Secondary Education Policy will not be
abolished by the next NDC government.
She urged Ghanaians to disregard the government’s propaganda and that the next Mahama
administration will cancel the policy.
Addressing NDC members and supporters at New Tafo Zongo on Wednesday as part of her
one day tour of the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Prof. Opoku-
Agyemang said the NDC will not cancel the free education policy which started as
progressively free under the Mahama administration
“We started Free SHS and with started the policy making it progressively free. We were not only taking care of the fees, we also took care of shoes and school bags. So, in our time you never heard that students go to school and for years they don’t receive books. There was no controversy about our progressively free SHS, it was well thought out.
So today, if someone claims that the NDC says it will cancel the Free SHS policy it is false. Others are alleging Mahama says he will cancel the policy when he becomes President. If anyone has an evidence to back the claim that Mahama has said he will cancel the policy, the person should put that out. We in the NDC have never made any such statement. In out time, did you ever hear about double-track system where students go to school for few weeks and then come and stay home for six months? We made the senior high school system better. We have only said that the policy as is being currently implemented by the Akufo-Addo government is not good and we will review it to make it better.”
