Several traders at the Kejetia Market in Kumasi are currently facing significant losses following a devastating fire that engulfed two shops in the largest trading center in the Ashanti region.
The fire, suspected to have ignited in the early hours of Friday, caused extensive damage to properties, particularly textiles and other fabrics stored in the affected shops.
Eyewitnesses reported that the fire originated from a shop that had been closed for over a year, spreading rapidly to a neighboring shop and consuming the merchandise within.
Nana Akwasi Prempeh, President of the Federation of Kejetia Traders, commended the swift response of the fire service, which prevented further damage to shops in the market.
He stated, “The security agencies patrol the market every night after receiving intelligence that some assailants had planned to set the facility on fire.”
The cause of the fire at the market is currently unknown as the fire service unit investigates the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
In the meantime, traders are advised to switch off all electrical devices before closing their stalls.
